چکیده

HOSTILITY IS A PERSONALITY and character trait with attitudinal (cynicism and mistrust of others), emotional (anger), and behavioral (overt and repressed aggression) components. In epidemiological studies, hostility has been frequently measured with the Cook-Medley questionnaire, an empirical scale originally designed to characterize mistrustful attitudes. High hostility level is related to increased risk of angiographically documented coronary atherosclerosis, essential hypertension, coronary artery disease (CAD) incidence, and allcause mortality. However, 3 studies have reported no relationship between hostility and CAD outcomes. It has also been shown that hostility is a predictor of restenosis after coronary angioplasty and of carotid intima media thickness among healthy postmenopausal women and middle-aged men. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain why hostility may increase cardiovascular risk, including concomitant unhealthful lifestyle behaviors. For example, Everson et al have shown that the association between cynical distrust and cardiovascular outcomes was explained by simultaneous adjustment for smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and body mass index. Our objective was to examine the association of hostile attitudes with coronary artery calcification, a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis, among a subset of participants in the Coronary Author Affiliations: Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program, Northern California Region, Oakland, Calif (Drs Iribarren and Sidney); Department of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Bethesda, Md (Dr Bild); Department of Family and Community Medicine, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Ill (Dr Liu); Division of Preventive Medicine (Dr Markovitz) and School of Public Health (Dr Roseman), University of Alabama, Birmingham; and Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pa (Dr Matthews). Association of hostility with coronary artery calcification in young adults: the CARDIA study. Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults.

CONTEXT Psychosocial factors, including personality and character traits, may play a role in the development and expression of coronary artery disease. OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether hostility, a previously reported predictor of clinical coronary artery disease, is associated with coronary calcification, which is a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. Longitudinal association of serum carotenoids and tocopherols with hostility: the CARDIA Study.

Hostility is a personality trait associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease. No study has reported the association between hostility and antioxidants, which may be mediators for atherosclerosis. CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) Study participants were 3,579 men and women 18-30 years of age in 1985-1986. Serum carotenoids and tocopherols were measured at ye...

Transitions in Metabolic Risk and Long‐Term Cardiovascular Health: Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study

BACKGROUND Despite evidence suggesting that early metabolic dysfunction impacts cardiovascular disease risk, current guidelines focus on risk assessments later in life, missing early transitions in metabolic risk that may represent opportunities for averting the development of cardiovascular disease. METHODS AND RESULTS In 4420 young adults in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adu...

Re: "Alcohol consumption, binge drinking, and early coronary calcification: findings from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study".

It is unclear to what extent the apparently beneficial cardiovascular effects of moderate alcohol consumption are mediated by protection against atherosclerosis. Alcohol consumption, coronary heart disease risk factors, and coronary calcification (a marker of atherosclerosis) were measured during 15 years of follow-up in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study (1985-...

Hostility Modifies the Association between TV Viewing and Cardiometabolic Risk

BACKGROUND It was hypothesized that television viewing is predictive of cardiometabolic risk. Moreover, people with hostile personality type may be more susceptible to TV-induced negative emotions and harmful health habits which increase occurrence of cardiometabolic risk. PURPOSE The prospective association of TV viewing on cardiometabolic risk was examined along with whether hostile persona...
